Dentist Indemnity Insurance

For the most part, any dental treatment delivered in a professional capacity by a dentist, ie “on the clock” is covered by their employer’s dentist indemnity insurance. However this does not extend to treatment delivered outside of work, or treatment for which you are not qualified to deliver. It’s not often that people experience serious medical difficulties in a dental surgery, but it does happen, and if someone were to for example suffer a heart attack or react badly to anaesthetic, you don’t want to be in a situation where you don’t feel you can help for fear of being sued.

Whilst such cases are rare, they have been known, and it’s a known fact that “blame culture” is making our society more and more litigious. The Medical Indemnity Register is an independent broker that provides insurance for any off the clock care that you deliver outside of your professional remit. It’s not often that as a passer-by you’ll be required to give emergency dental treatment at the scene of an incident, but again this has been known to happen.

This insurance works in the same way as normal indemnity insurance for dental nurses and dentists, but applies to any medical treatment you deliver that is unrelated to dentistry, anywhere, at any time. This can be either as a Samaritan act, working in a volunteer first aid role (for example, a local fete) or for an unexpected medical emergency at your workplace.

There can be few things more frustrating for a medical professional than being able to help but not wanting to risk litigation, and this insurance provides you with the freedom and peace of mind to be able to use your skills to help others as you see fit.
